Sleepy Sunday, Vol. 6

Although Sleepy LaBeef is an American original, he rarely does original songs.

However, he does one on “I’ll Never Lay My Guitar Down,” his 1996 album on Rounder Records.

“The Open Door” was co-written by Sleepy’s daughter, Jessie Mae, then just 15, and his wife, Linda.

It’s a little bit of gospel, and you always hear a little bit of gospel in Sleepy’s terrific live shows. It’s right at home next to the country, blues and rock. Never seems forced, never seems preachy. Just testifyin,’ is all.

When Wanda Jackson, another American original, played here a couple of years ago, she also mixed a little gospel into her show. Seemed right at home there, too.
