If you liked last week’s Sleepy Sunday foray into the blues, we have another for you this week.
Sleepy LaBeef, national treasure, covered this Sonny Boy Williamson tune in 1980, during his first sessions for Rounder Records. It wasn’t released for more than 20 years, though.
His backing band includes a couple of fellow veterans — Johnny Cash’s longtime piano player, the fine honky-tonker Earl Poole Ball, and Elvis’ former drummer, D.J. Fontana.
Here is Sleepy’s version of a tune also known as “Got The Bottle Up and Gone.” I’ve always liked the chugging guitar lead on this one.
“Bottle Up and Go,” Sleepy LaBeef, 1980, from “Rockabilly Blues,” a 2001 release.
