Sleepy Sunday, Vol. 27

Sleepy LaBeef, national treasure, has thousands of songs in his repertoire. He does rock, blues, country, swing, gospel, you name it. He covers everyone.

Today, it’s Little Richard, and a tune written by Robert Blackwell and Johnny Marascalco. It’s from 1956, and has been widely covered — by Bill Haley and his Comets, Elvis, Chuck Berry, Gene Vincent, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Wanda Jackson and even John Lennon.

Sleepy recorded it during a 1981 studio session in Massachusetts. You be the judge on whether this cover works. I’m not totally sold on it, but it comes close enough.
